HANDHELD CARDBOARD SHREDDER

THE CARDBOARATOR!

Shred your way to a better life!

Our Idea

Who are we?

My name is Jaxan Kay and I am an Electrical trained engineer with a interest area of Mechatronics Engineering. Mechatronics is a mixture between Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineering. I am still a student however, I will be graduated next year, and I have decided that there is nothing stopping me from building my own product and company now.

Please join me in exploring the possibilities of improving peoples lives in the small ways that matter. First up, Handheld Cardboard Shredder.

What are we offering?

Cutting up cardboard can be both fun and tedious. The cardboard shredder aims to remove the tedious aspect by providing a simple way to shred cardboard. All you need is the handheld shredder and a power drill of your choice. It works by using the power of the drill to turn a drive chain which in turn moves a set of blades designed to shred cardboard as it is fed into the machine. It has the advantage of being handheld, so you no longer need to flatten the boxes, you just feed the cardboard into the front of the device, and it will shred the cardboard in strips making your cardboard cutting experience quick fun and easy.

Since the cardboard has been shredded, you no longer need to worry about fitting chucks of cardboard into a recycle bin, you simply dump the shreds into the bin, or find other household uses for the shredded cardboard.

Who are we offering it to?

Our product is useful primarily to homeowners that are tired of spending time cutting up and fitting pieces of cardboard into a recycle bin. We are not targeting all homeowners, only those that would already have power drills and would be interested in an additional accessory that will make their lives easier.

We may also be able to target small to medium business owners that have large amounts of cardboard boxes from their suppliers. I once worked at a movie theater for example, and I would have loved to have this product to cut up the numerous boxes from all the candy, pop and other products we provided to our customers.

Why does that person care?

This product will reduce the time spent cutting up cardboard and fitting it into a recycle bin. It is also a cool gadget that owners of a power drill will find fun to use. Homeowners are our target market simply because they are most likely to have a power drill on hand, however, small to medium business owners that have daily or weekly cardboard cutting needs may wish to use this product because it simplifies a time intensive project their employees have to do. A movie theater I worked at for example had a large space to store cardboard boxes, and once every week they would spend and hour or two with 2-3 employees cutting up and flattening cardboard for the recycling bins. This is time that can be saved, and thus this is money back in the pockets of the users.

Our distinctive competencies

This product is distinct in that it is the only handheld device on the market. It also does not require additional cost into motors and batteries. This is what makes it distinct.

There is little to prevent knockoff clones from stealing this idea, other than to make our product durable and focus on marketing after our product is developed. It is also in the plan to look into patenting a handheld approach to cardboard shredding, but failing that, this product is not much different than other products of its type, the market is large enough for multiple competitors that steal this idea from us.

The team right now consists of one person who is an engineer. The plan is to build a team that is specialized in producing products like this. Once this team is assembled, this will also add to the distinctive competency of our team and product.

The substitutes & alternatives

Paper shredders have been around a long time, but they are not generally designed for cardboard and can break down easily if used to shred cardboard. There are large industrial cardboard shredders that cost thousands of dollars, and are intended for factories or large cardboard processing applications outside the price range of the average homeowner or small business owner.

There are multiple examples of Do It Yourself (DIY) projects on the internet, however these are not products, they are projects by interested people, people that would likely buy our product.

None of these options are handheld, and all require the cardboard to be cut into sheets to be shredded. Our product does the cutting and shredding at the same time, and in the location where you want (such as right above a recycle bin).

The Value

Our first key person

Homeowners, particularly guys/girls who like gadgets and own a power drill.

They care because this product will be a cool tool that they can use to shred cardboard for better storage and easier time cutting up cardboard.

Our promise to them is they will be able to shred cardboard cheaply and effectively in a location of their choosing since this device is mobile. Blades are also replaceable, so the device will last a long time with proper care.

Our second key person

Small Business owners who want to save money on allocating employees to cut up cardboard boxes. Movie theaters for example are a prime target since they receive many cardboard boxes from their supplies for candy, pop, and other concession products

They care because this product will save their employees time, and thus less money will be spent on a weekly basis.

Our promise to them is that this product will save them money provided they use it.

Our third key person

Our third key person is kids that get stuck cutting up cardboard and want to do it faster. They will encourage their parents to buy it.

They care because this product is a useful power driven tool that will help them cut up cardboard faster. i would have loved this product as a kid.

Our promise to them is the product will be safe to use with proper training, though legally, kids will be discouraged from using the device without adult supervision.

The only way I would buy this idea is if I had a specific use for it. You should focus on marketing to small business owners and not bother with home owners. I can see it being somewhat useful to these small business owners and I believe that you could build this thing.

I would buy one! I think it is a great idea! Especially the home owner version which is cheap and acts as an accessory to a power drill. If it worked well, I might buy the more expensive version, but it would have to be highly rated as durability is really important to me. I’ll give you top marks though since I think it is great!

I think the household version is a good idea. I would buy it. You might be able to get small businesses to run with it. I doubt you could produce this yourself, but I see you plan to get a team to do so, that makes sense, but you won’t be able to do this with an electrical degree despite your interests on the mechanical side, so you will need other people involved. I think it is very unique in the market though as there does not seem to be anything out there like it.
