Green Hangers

Our Idea

Who are we?

My name is Austen Hartley, I am a 5th year mechanical engineering student that has a passion for design and innovation. I also consider myself a little bit of an environmentalist. I believe that small changes over long periods of time can make a huge impact. Which is why I have created a small change that you can implement in your life.

What are we offering?

I have created an alternative solution to the common household item, the coat hanger. Traditional coat hanger are usually made of plastic or metal and occasionally wood. All of these options create a large environmental footprint from production to disposal. Additionally, they can be relatively expensive given the simplicity of design and function.

The Green Hanger is the solution. I have created a fully functioning version of the common household item made completely out of cardboard. The Green Hangers are not only completely recyclable but also made from already recycled cardboard, and priced at a point that you can finally have enough for all your clothes.

Who are we offering it to?

The Green Hanger is perfect for people who are either or entirely

Environmentally conscious  – trying to reduce their carbon footprint

In temporary living – For example students

Looking for a cheap alternative – Anyone on a budget who is home shopping

Why does that person care?

The value of the Green Hanger is important to our customers because they too care about the changing environment around them and would prefer to recycle and reuse than to create waste. Our customers may not be interested or may not be able to afford the traditional two to four dollar per hanger price. And finally, our customer loves that when they’re done using them, they can just fold and recycle them rather than worry about disposing the metal and plastic properly.

Our distinctive competencies

As a Mechanical Engineer I can assure our customers that the design will not only be visually appealing and recyclable – but it will also be stable enough to hold those heavy winter jackets. I plan to sell the coat hangers on my two existing platforms that I am already familiar with – Amazon and Shopify stores. I can handle everything from online marketing to shipping.  and production.

The substitutes & alternatives

There is currently only a few options on the market. Metal coat hangers, plastic coat hangers and wooden coat hangers. All of which are not only expensive but also have large carbon footprints. The reason these alternatives are expensive is that during production, they have to either wire draw the metal ones, melt and mould the plastic ones, or cut to shape the wooden ones. The green hanger is extremely easy and cheap to make.

Really like the idea, my only concern would be hanging wet clothes. But I guess everyone would already have metal coat hangers that they could use for wet clothes anyways. The cheap price would be awesome, especially for people with a lot of clothes.

Love the concept, I’m confident you would be able to make a great functional design. It would also be really easy to take to market. With the growing concern for the environment it would definitely catch someones eye and make your brand look really good.

Great concept! I always look forward to seeing new ideas on how to reduce the impact we have on the environment. I am interested to see how the cardboard will withstand heavy winter coats. The cheap price is very appealing and I think these would be a great option for students traveling abroad for a short duration of time on trips like exchange programs,
